Reduce Water Retention

Water retention, also known as edema in medical terms is a state in which water is retained in your body due to variety of reasons. When this happens, it may cause different reactions, such as swelling along with tenderness. This might specially happen around your abdominal area.


  • Heart or kidney problems:

    This could cause swelling of your ankles and legs.

  • Pregnancy:

    It causes weak circulation in your leg veins and thereby causing water retention.

  • Varicose veins:

    It happens among many older people.

  • Lymphatic system blockage:

    This causes a type of retention known by the name of lymphoedema.

  • Dehydration:

    When body does not get enough water, it tries to retain as much water as it could and attempts to minimize water loss from body. When this happens, the body also tries to conserve salt.

  • Medicines and Hormones:

    Increased amount of various hormones could also cause your body to retain water.

  • Histamine:

    This causes bloating along with tummy swelling

  • High salt intake

  • Hot weather

  • Nutritional deficiency

  • Pregnancy

  • Oral contraceptive

  • Menstrual cycle

  • Menopause

Types of water retention:

  • Generalized edema:

    Just like its name, it refers to edema that occurs throughout the body.

  • Localized edema:

    This occurs in specific parts of organs. Examples could be:

    • Cerebral edema:

      It is the extracellular fluid gathering in the brain. This accumulation could occur either in a toxic or unusual metabolic states. It could also happen at high altitudes where there is less oxygen supply to brain. Conditions like systematic lupus could also cause cerebral edema.

    • Pulmonary edema:

      It happens when there is an obstruction to remove blood through pulmonary veins of lung. This obstruction causes pressure to rise in lunga��s blood vessels. In addition to that, toxic chemicals inhalation could also cause this.

Diet to reduce water retention

  • Have eight glasses of fluid every day. This could be just plain water or fruit and vegetable juices. You could also take in herbal tea such as dandelion and nettle. As mentioned above, the more water you take, the less water body would retain.
  • Instead of eating one or two big meals, try to divide them into six different small meals. You could eat these meals every three hours.
  • Add a lot of diuretic fruits in your diet.
  • List of vegetables you could choose from: lettuce, peppers, leafy green vegetables, carrots, watercress, and celery.
    Vegetables which have high potassium also help to keep a healthy liquid balance.
  • In addition to that, also add decent amounts of unsalted nuts, bananas, seeds and wholegrain crackers in your meal plan.

In addition, it should also be noted that the causes of liquid retention in ones body depend on variety of factors, such as the ones mentioned above. It might also happen due to some serious health issues. If there is a problem with your heart or kidney, then they might fail to function well which could result into water retention. If your water retention lasts for more than one week and does not respond to any of the simple diagnosis mentioned above then make sure to consult with your physicians.

Physical examinations could be used to diagnose serious water retentions along with the help of a patienta��s medical history. Tests such as urine tests, liver and kidney tests should also be conducted. Also, a chest X-ray along with electrocardiogram could also be performed in determining the cause of water retentions.

If the tests reveal that water retention is actually a symptom of some serious health problem then treatment should be provided to cure it first.
