Water Retention and Bloating

Edema is the term used for water retention and is caused due to excess water retention within the interstitial spaces or tissues.

  • Excessive consumption of salt or sodium can force the kidneys to conserve or retain more water resulting in accumulation of fluid or water in the tissues finally resulting in water retention.
  • Women are more prone to this condition during menstruation and pregnancy due to hormonal changes.
  • Oral contraceptives which contain estrogen can also result in causing this condition.
  • Medications used for hypertension, steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs can result in causing water retention further leading to bloating.
  • Kidney diseases are responsible for causing the condition of water retention as the kidneys fail to excrete the excess fluid and sodium from the body.
  • Water retention can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying disorder or medical condition such as chronic lung diseases, congestive heart failure, varicose veins, liver cirrhosis, severe allergic reaction, hyperthyroidism, B vitamin deficiency, arthritis and nutritional deficiency.

How to Prevent Water Retention

  • A change in lifestyle and a few dietary modifications will help in managing the condition of edema.
  • Reduce the intake of salt in your food and include foods rich in proteins, fruits and green vegetables.
  • Water aerobics and cardiovascular exercises will also help in eliminating this condition.
  • Include magnesium and calcium supplements under the supervision of a physician as they help in elevating the condition of water retention.
  • Caffeine has diuretic properties that help in providing relief from water retention and it also reduces bloating as well.
  • Include natural diuretic foods such as dandelion, asparagus, anise, parsley, peppermint, tea, tomato juice, celery, cranberry juice, etc.
  • Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily in order to fight this condition and it also prevents dehydration.
