As we all know that water is a critical component of the human body as 75% of the body weight is made up of water. Hence, adequate hydration is needed to allow the proper functioning of the body’s metabolic activities. The

signs of dehydration

occurs when the body loses more amount of water than the optimum level. If there is one percent or more reduction in the body weight due to this fluid loss, the condition of dehydration sets in. There are different levels of dehydration, which depends on the percentage of lost body weight – mild, moderate and severe. Read on to know more about the signs of dehydration.

Mild/Moderate Signs of Dehydration

The primary sign of this condition is thirst. There are other symptoms which include:

  • Infrequent passing urine in small amounts (fewer than 3-4 times in a day)
  • Concentrated, dark urine
  • Dry eyes, lips and mouth
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Headache
  • Light headedness or dizziness

The moderate dehydration occurs when there is a 3-5% reduction in body weight due to fluid loss. This causes one to lose stamina and strength. Also, this is the main reason of heat exhaustion. If the dehydration is ongoing (chronic), then it can adversely affect the kidney function. This results in the manifestation of kidney stones. This can even cause:

  • Constipation
  • Cholesterol problems
  • Harm to your muscles, joints or liver

Severe Signs of Dehydration

This occurs when there is a reduction of more than 5% of your body weight. The signs include:

  • Low level of consciousness
  • Seizures
  • Cool feet and hands
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Weak pulse
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Sunken eyes
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty in passing urine
  • Wrinkled, dry skin

The condition becomes extremely serious when the body weight reduces by more than 10%. If this condition is not treated on time, then this can be fatal as blood circulation stops. Hence, these signs of dehydration should be immediately taken into consideration to avoid the adverse consequences.
