Dengue Fever a�� Signs and Symptoms

Infection with any of the dengue virus can be sub clinical (lack of symptoms). However, it may cause sickness starting from a mild fever to a severe and fatal condition known as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. The symptoms of the illness may last for nearly a week. A few persons may even experience a re-occurrence of fever which may last for another 2-3 days.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever

These symptoms mainly occur in older children and adults. Young children may experience no symptoms at all. These include:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Heavy menstrual periods and minor bleeding (gums or nose)
  • Hair loss and peeling of skin
  • Severe itching and rash on legs and arms
  • Flushed skin on neck and face as fever subsides
  • Joint and muscle pain (elbows, knees and ankles)
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, metallic taste in the mouth
  • Intense headache (behind the eyes)
  • Sudden development of fever (3-7 days)

Symptoms of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever

These is a rare complication which is frequently seen in children below 15 years of age. However, it may occur in adults too.

  • Shock and perhaps death
  • 2-5 days after development of fever, cardiovascular disease or rapid deterioration occurs
  • Same signs and symptoms as dengue fever
