Fluoride Poisoning Symptoms

Fluoride salts in soluble form are toxic in high concentration levels. Any contact with the eye or skin can be dangerous. Most of the cases of fluoride poisoning are related to accidental ingestion of rodenticides or insecticides. Even malfunction in water fluoridation system can lead to fluoride poisoning. Fluoride affects different people in different ways. The symptoms of fluoride can differ widely. Read on to know more about

fluoride poisoning symptoms

.

The fluoride water symptoms depend on several factors like length of exposure time, mode of exposure, body burden and genetic predisposition. Synergistic effects are also involved. For example, fluoride may enhance other drugs that people might be taking. Also, fluoride combining with water to form potent toxins, like aluminum fluoride.

Symptoms of Fluoride Poisoning

Fluoride found in toothpaste and drinking water works in two ways for maintaining healthy and strong teeth. Fluoride aids in preventing tooth decay and remineraliztaion of damaged teeth. High concentrations of fluoride may cause fluoride poisoning. The symptoms may vary:

  • Dental fluorosis (White spots on the teeth)
  • Arthritic joints
  • Cancer
  • Respiratory disease

Adverse Effects of Fluoride Toxicity

  • Calcification of ligaments – calcium deposition on the ligaments
  • Increases potassium levels in the bloodstream
  • Adversely affects many enzymes responsible for blood coagulation, nerve impulse transmission and energy production
  • Irritation in the mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract

Fluoride Toxicity and Exposure

There is a huge controversy over fluorosis (fluoride poisoning) related to high concentrations of fluoride in drinking water. The optimal, accepted fluoride level in drinking water is

0.7-1.2 ppm

. If the fluoride levels exceed 2 ppm, then the fluoridated drinking water should not be consumed. Children should especially avoid drinking such fluoridated water.

Several studies were trying to find a link between cancer and fluoridated drinking water. There is a strong belief that fluoridated drinking water may cause

osteosarcomas

, which is a form of bone tumors. But these studies failed to provide a strong link which could establish a link between cancer and fluoridated drinking water.
