Amoebic dysentery is primarily responsible for around 40,000-110,000 deaths annually all over the world. Apart from that, this gastrointestinal infection may occur in endemic forms due to high levels of constant reinfection and transmission.

Amoebic Dysentery Symptoms

The symptoms associated with this affliction can range from mild to severe. This range depends on the site of infection. In an immuno compromised individual such as post-transplant patient or AIDS/HIV patient, this infection can be life threatening.

This infection can become complicated in rare cases where the amoeba invades the intestinal wall lining known as peritoneum. This severe affliction causes perforation in the wall and finally leads to a condition called peritonitis. This means inflammation of the intestinal wall lining.
