Water Fluoridation – Goal and Implementation

A controlled and effective step to minimize tooth decay is implemented by adding a measured amount of fluoride in the drinking water supplies. Fluoridated water actually contains fluoride at a specific concentrations which effectively controls cavities. When the concentrations of natural fluoride level crosses the recommended levels, the process of defluoridation is carried out. Bottled drinking water has been suspected to contain unknown fluoride concentrations. Water filters which are meant for domestic use can efficiently remove or trap fluoride from the water.

Goal of Water Fluoridation

The main aim is to minimize tooth decay by specifying the levels of fluoride in public water supplies. Dental caries is a major chronic disease which is highly prevalent worldwide. This can affect one by impairing eating and inducing pain. Also, it can impair facial appearance and speaking abilities. The adverse affects are mostly seen in children, especially those who belong to low socioeconomic zone.

The condition of tooth decay majority affects 60-90% of school children in many industrialized countries. Also, this adverse condition is expected to rise in many other countries due to inadequate fluoride intake and changing diet. The focus on fluoridation of water is on the similar lines of iodizing salt for preventing goiter and mental retardation.

Implementation of Water Fluoridation

This process does not affect the smell, taste or appearance of drinking water. This process is implemented by adding either one of the three chemical compounds to the drinking water supplies.

  • Sodium fluorosillicate
  • Fluorosillcic acid
  • Sodium fluoride

The three chemical compounds were chosen on the basis of their low cost, availability, safety and solubility factor. According to the U.S. standards, the recommended fluoride level ranges from 0.7-1.2 mg/L.
