Introduction

In spite of the adverse effects of adding chlorine to the drinking water supplies, the safety and purity standards of the water has been greatly improved for more than a century. By disinfecting our drinking water supplies, we ensure that it is free of any pathogenic microorganisms which can cause life-threatening and serious health implications like typhoid fever and cholera. Till today, chlorine remains one of the most frequently used disinfectant for drinking water. Also, there is a vast scientific information available for this disinfectant.

During the drinking water treatment process, chlorine is added to clean the water supply. Although, this disinfectant also reacts with other organic compounds which are naturally present in the water like decaying leaves. This results in the formation of a group of chemicals called as disinfection by-products.

Disinfection By-products

The most commonly found disinfection by-product are

trihalomethanes (THMs)

, which also include chloroform. The level of THMs found in the drinking water supplies depends on several factors, such as the water source and the season.

To cite an example, the level of THM are usually lower in the winter when compared with summer season. This is due to the fact that the amount of natural organic compounds are lower. Hence, less amount of chlorine is needed to purify and disinfect the water at colder temperatures.

Benefits of Chlorine

According to recent scientific data, the benefits of drinking water chlorination are more than the health risks posed by the THMs and other disinfection by-products. In spite of the presence of other disinfectants, chlorine is still the most favored option of water treatment experts. It is highly effective against a range of pathogenic microorganisms when combined used with a modern filtration system for treating drinking water.
