is a serious environmental problem which affects many regions, especially in the U.S. and Canada. It can be defined as the precipitation which has high amounts of acids. Most of the times, acid rain occurs due to lightning strikes and volcanoes. But one of the main reason for acid rains is high levels of noxious gases released by automobiles and factories. These noxious gases have a negative impact on the ecological balance. Read on to know more about the future implications of acid rain on our biodiversity.

Acid rain can be related to acid deposition. This deposition includes dry as well as wet deposition. Adverse effects of acid rain can be seen on the human health, soils, forests and fauna and flora. This is also responsible for resulting in extinction of many species.

This harmful rain can cause long lasting effects on earth. These negative effects include:

Humans

Acid rain does not directly cause any harm to the humans, but the pollution which causes acid rain does affect humans. Air pollution can cause various health problems such as damage to lungs, asthma and bronchitis. The nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide may cause irritation in ears, eyes and nose.

Plants

Acid rain depletes the soil nutrients. Hence, it affects the plant growth. The soil quality degrades and its polluted with harmful substances such as aluminum and mercury. These compounds are absorbed by the plants. This makes the plants susceptible to various diseases.

Aquatic Life

This interferes with the pH of water (pH6-8). As acid rain mixes in water bodies, the pH of the water reduces to 5. This lowering in the pH causes detrimental effects to the aquatic life. This endangers their existence.

Several species of frogs, fishes and other aquatic organisms have become extinct whereas various others are on the brink of extinction.
