Pollution has become one of the major concern world wide. Acid rain is one such form of pollution which is a serious environmental problem affecting many regions. Acid rain can be related to acid deposition. This deposition includes dry as well as wet deposition. Adverse effects of acid rain can be seen on the human health, soils, forests and fauna and flora. This is also responsible for resulting in extinction of many species.

Types of Acid Deposition

Two types of acid deposition occurs – wet and dry deposition. In wet deposition, acidic dew, snow or rain are involved. In dry deposition, harmful particles such as gaseous elements, dust particles and polluting gases are directly absorbed by the Earth’s surface. These pollutants are not converted into acids till they directly come in contact with water.

Human and Natural Causes of Acid Rain

Detrimental human activities as well as natural causes may lead to acid rain. These causes include:

  • Natural causes like volcanic eruptions, decomposition and decaying can result in emission of noxious gases. These emissions result in acid rain.
  • Vehicular transportation and power generation plants also emit nitrogen oxides and sulfur. These are the noxious gases which are primarily responsible for acid rain.
