Harmful Effects of Acid Rain

Acid rain is defined as the precipitation which has high amounts of acids. Most of the times, acid rain occurs due to lightning strikes and volcanoes. But one of the main reason for acid rains is high levels of noxious gases released by automobiles and factories. These noxious gases have a negative impact on the ecological balance. Read on to know more about the

harmful effects of the acid rain

.

Adverse effects of acid rain can be seen on the human health, soils, forests and fauna and flora. This is also responsible for resulting in extinction of many species.

Harmful Effects of Acid Rain

The flora and fauna of our ecosystem has been badly affected by the acid rain. Even starting from soil cemistry to the aquatic life has been adversely affected. Some of the adverse and hazardous effects of acid rain include:

Vegetation

Acid rain causes corrosion of the protective layering of leaves in plants. This affects the process of photosynthesis. The plants become vulnerable to numerous diseases as they lack in nutrition. Also, the lack of nutrition in plants can be due to the absorption of acid rain by the soil.

Effects on Soil

As the soil is rich in minerals and metals, harmful chemical reactions are observed when these come in contact with acid rain. Adverse reactions leads to soil erosion. Also, acid rain is responsible for reducing the soil’s fertility, leading to barren land.

Human Health

As already mentioned, acid rain makes the soil poisonous. Hence, the crops grown on this soil will be contaminated. This can severely affect human health and may even cause death. Also, acid rain leads to numerous health hazards when it contaminates the drinking water.

Historical Monuments

Acid rain damages paint color, stained glasses and corrodes metal. It reacts with calcium to form calcium bicarbonate; this is easily washed off. The severity of acid rain can be seen on the seven wonders of the world.
