Fluoride Removal from Drinking water

There is a public outcry against

fluoridation of drinking water

. Most people feel that fluoridation is an unsafe measure for drinking water that causes many health risks.

Water fluoridation

is the process where controlled amount of fluoride is added to the public water supply that minimizes tooth decay. This level of fluoride in the drinking water prevents cavities effectively. But there are certain adverse effects associated with these processes. Here is a list of methods to obtain drinking water free from fluoride.

Ways to Remove Fluoride from Drinking Water

Distillation Filtration

To remove fluoride from drinking water, distillation filters are commercially available that are quite effective. But, always keep this in mind that bottled water labeled ‘distilled water’ may contain a few undesirable contaminants.

Activated Alumina Defluoridation Filter

These types of filters are suitable for those places where high levels of fluorosis is present. They require frequent replacement and are relatively expensive filters. But, they are best suited for home water filtration.

Reverse Osmosis Filtration

This technique is used for purifying several varieties of bottled water. But some of the bottled water is unfluoridated. This purification system is not recommended for personal use as they are too expensive.

Methods that DO NOT Remove Fluoride

Pur, Brita and other filters:

Most of these filters are ineffective in eliminating fluoride from drinking water. Even after treating water, some amount of fluoride remains in the water.

Boiling Water:

Boiling water is not at all suitable for removing fluoride from drinking water. Instead of removing, it concentrates the fluoride.

Freezing Water:

This process does not affect the concentration of fluoride.
