Over the period of years, suggestions have been made about how much water or other fluids are necessary to compensate the body fluid lost during exercising. You must be thinking what is the correct quantity of water to drink? Remember that the more intensely and longer you exercise, the more impertinent it is to restore the lost fluids and electrolytes. Also, a

drop in blood volume has been linked to a loss of 2% of body weight in fluid

for an elite athlete. As a result, the heart works harder to pump blood through the bloodstream.

The decrease in blood volume can invariably cause a decrease in the athlete’s performance. Hence, his/her performance can be marred.

Hydration Guidelines for Athletes

You can use the following tip as a starting point, if you need some sort of guidance to determine how much water you should drink. In every twenty minutes, drink only one cup of water.

You can determine how much fluid you usually lose by checking your weight before and after you exercise. One pound equals to approximately 24 ounces of fluid.

Sports Drinks

These drinks can be beneficial to those athletes who exercise at a high intensity for 60 to 90 minutes or more. It is very important to replace the spent potassium, sodium and other electrolytes during workout.

You should remember that under normal conditions, most athletes are least likely to deplete these essential minerals during intense training sessions. However, if you find yourself working out for long times (an ultramarathon or Ironman) or in extreme conditions, then consider consuming a sports drink enriched with electrolytes.

Hyponatremia

is a condition where the blood sodium concentration lowers. It may occur during events when athletes drink a large quantity of pure water.

Therefore, try to keep yourself hydrated as much as possible. This not only enhances your performance but also keeps a check on your blood volume.
