Mary E. Sanders, MS, who is the education director for WaterFit/Wave Aerobics, explains about the benefits of water exercise for seniors. These benefits are mentioned below:

1.Safety:

Water is a very safe medium or environment because you can’t fall as easily in water as on land. Also, a water based exercise doesn’t stress the joints as it has a low impact. The other advantage is that water has a cooling effect. You can control the intensity of your work-out without thinking about overheating and gravity. You still get a cardiovascular work-out and can manage you weight better.

2.Quality of Life:

Daily living can be a difficult challenge for senior citizens who suffer from chronic conditions or who are generally inactive. These people can improve their quality of life by performing movements that resemble real-life patterns in the water.

3.General Health:

Research has made it evident that senior citizens who do water exercise regularly benefit significantly in terms of general health. This form of exercise helps in improving oxygen capacity as well as resting heart rate in older people.

4.Rheumatoid Arthritis:

For people who are afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis, water can be a wonderful environment for exercising. It reduces the pain and people find it more easier to perform daily activities.

5.Osteoarthritis:

Water environment also helps those who suffer from osteoarthritis. A study involving middle-aged to older women revealed that water based exercises improved bending, walking and mobility. It also enhanced their ability to perform household work.

6.Cardiovascular Health:

Aqua based exercises can even improve cardiovascular health. If you exercise in shallow water for 45 minutes for 4 times in a week, you may have a healthy cardiovascular system.

  1. Thanks for helping to spread the word.

We are talking to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago to begin training their therapists in Peyow Aqua PIlates, not just for Seniors and those with chronic illness, but also the disabled and accident and stroke victims.

We currently teach the class at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Peninsula Spa in Chicago and are seeing amazing results.

    In good health,
    Anne Burnell
