Why Should Humans Avoid Drinking Sea Water?

When you are swimming in sea, you should be aware that you should not drink sea water. Firstly, salty sea water does not taste good and secondly the sea water is rich in bacteria that can cause harmful diseases.

It is estimated that one liter of sea water can contain 20,000 different species of bacteria. Present studies reveal that there could be nearly five to ten million different species of bacteria living in the ocean.

Drinking Sea Water is Dangerous:

One should not consume sea water due to the following causes –

  • Saline Content

    a�� The salt content of sea water in about three times greater than the blood in humans. Hence, our body cannot metabolize it safely.

  • Dehydration

    a�� When there is excess salt in our body or when excess salty sea water enters in our body, the water existing in our body is used to dilute it. Hence, it causes dehydration in humans and an urge for fresh water in the body. The more we drink the sea water, the more we want the fresh water.

  • Brain Damage

    a�� The effects of dehydration cause damage to the brain and can cause unconsciousness.

  • Damage to the Kidney

    a�� The excess salts are removed through kidney in the body. When the salts are in excess amounts, it can cause damage to the kidney and cause to cease its function.

  • Bacteria

    a�� Apart from the excess salts, sea water also contains numerous bacteria which can be harmful and cause several threatening diseases.

Drinking Sea Water Effects:

Drinking sea water can cause severe dehydration and a person starts to have the following symptoms –

  • Loss of appetite
  • Thirst
  • Dry skin
  • Sleepiness
  • Reduced urine volume
  • Headaches
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizzyness
  • Hallucinations
  • Unconsciousness

Sometimes, drinking sea water can also lead to death.
