How to know the Safety of Plastic Water Bottles?

Everyone wants to drink safe water. If we buy a new water bottle and again fill it with water, it becomes unsafe as it depends on the plastic used in manufacturing of the bottle. Hence, everyone who wants to store water in plastic bottles, must know which kind of plastic is safe for water storage.

Safe Plastic Water Bottles:

  • Read the number at the bottom of bottle which every bottle has.
  • This number tells about the type of plastic used in bottle.
  • Some plastic bottle can leach chemicals and can cause risk in brain development of fetus, infants and children.
  • Bottles containing number 3, 6 or 7 should not be used for drinking purposes.
  • Plastic bottle with number 3 can cause certain cancers such as prostrate and breast cancer, hormonal imbalance and other ailments.
  • Water bottles with number 6 on it can interfere with hormones of the body.
  • Water bottles with number 7 are used for baby bottles and 5 gallon capacity water bottles. This plastic can leach chemicals that leads to ovarian and breast cancers.
  • Plastic bottle with number 7 on it contains BPA compound and can leach the chemicals in water.
  • Plastic water bottles with numbers 1,2, 4 and 5 can be used, but not reused.
  • Reports confirm that you can wash the bottles properly and reuse them once or twice.
  • Do not heat the bottles or other plastic containers as even the good plastic can leach out the chemicals when heated.

Safe Plastic Water Bottle Alternatives:

  • Nalgene line plastic products made from Eastman Tritan copolyester, which is a BPA-free plastic.
  • Avent and Born Free provide water bottles free from BPA. This is made from Polyethersulfone (PES) compound.
  • PES has much higher heat resistance and is similar in weight and feel.
  • SIGG provides aluminium metal and lightweight bottles.
  • Klean Kanteen includes bottles made from stainless steel.
