Typhoid Fever – Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

Typhoid fever is a severe health condition caused by a bacterium Salmonella typhi in humans. It is also called

Enteric fever

and is rarely found in the US. But for the travelers, this can be hazardous. Worldwide, it infects over 20 million people per year.

The bacteria spreads with the fecal oral route. Frequent travelers get infected with the bacteria by taking food from infected hands of other people or by drinking contaminated water or other beverages.

Symptoms of Typhoid Fever:

Following are some of the symptoms of typhoid fever –

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Mild vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nose bleeding
  • Joints pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Blood in diarrhea
  • Thirst
  • Enlarged liver
  • Anemia
  • Fatigue

Treatment of Typhoid Fever:

The ways to diagnose and treat typhoid fever are relatively easy, but prevention of exposure to Salmonella bacteria which causes typhoid are even easier.

  • Visit to a Doctor

    – The illness can be quite destructive if not treated properly. Hence, you need to go to doctor immediately.

  • Antibiotics

    – Doctor will prescribe you some antibiotics for typhoid fever treatment. Doctor will advise antibiotics such as –

    ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol and ampicillin

    . You should complete the antibiotic regimen your doctor prescribed.

  • Hygiene

    – You should keep the surroundings clean as much as possible.

  • Fruits should be washed properly before eating and drinking water should be boiled.
  • Frequently use soap and water to wash your hands after using washrooms.
  • Limit your interactions with other people who are not infected with the typhoid bacteria as it can spread the bacteria.
  • Typhoid can cause diarrhea and dehydration will result.
  • Food

    – You should consume high calorie diet to counteract nutrient loss due to illness.

  • Bowel movements should be monitored regularly for traces of bacteria.

Once you are free from the bacteria, you will then be free of illness and visit the doctor for further stool examination.
