How Does Water Turn To Steam

Water has many forms.If you freeze water it turns to ice and once it melts it turns to liquid, if heated on a high temperature it boils and then turns to steam. But do we really know how does it turn to steam. We all would have noticed on a hot summer day water evaporating but it doesn’t have to boil to turn into vapour.

Lets exactly know how this happens:

Water has molecules and these molecules move at a different speed. The molecules that move slow are the low energy molecules and the ones that move fast are high energy molecules whereas the ones with a moderate temperature move smoothly and collide with each other to break free from the surface to get into the air. This is what we call as evaporation. We should differentiate between evaporation and boiling. During evaporation the molecules escape taking the heat with them and on the other hand when too much heat is given the molecules get high energy and collide with each other to escape and this is how water turns into steam. In evaporation the energy of molecules becomes slow in the air and this stick to the skin and this process is called condensation. Both the process which is evaporation and condensation happens simultaneously.

There are four factors that determine the rate of evaporation in the skin:

  • The temperature at which the skin is
  • The temperature of the surrounding air
  • The amount of humidity in the air
  • The air pressure
